Fire is the element of full expression. After wood's growth comes the phase where everything is in bloom and in view: midsummer, midday, the moment an idea is shared out loud. In the five phases (오행 ohaeng) fire is the peak of outward energy.
Fire belongs to summer and to the south. Its color in 오방색 obangsaek is 적 jeok, red, the color used in Korea for protection and celebration, from red bean porridge at the winter solstice to red on wedding clothes. Of the classical virtues it is linked with 예 禮, courtesy or propriety.
In the cycles, wood feeds fire and fire makes earth, the way ash becomes soil. Fire melts metal, and water puts fire out. Two stems carry fire, Byeong 丙 and Jeong 丁, and two branches, the Snake 巳 and the Horse 午.
A lot of fire
A fire heavy chart is often read as warm, lively and visible, someone who lights up a room and may run hot. The tradition looks for water to cool it and earth to give the heat somewhere useful to go.
Little or no fire
Little or no fire is common. The tradition reads it as a chart that expresses itself more quietly, and fire years and fire people can feel like sunlight arriving. It is a point of interest, never a flaw.
In Korean life
Red is one of the five colors in 색동 saekdong stripes and in 오방색 wrapping cloths and ribbons. Red bean porridge (팥죽 patjuk) at the winter solstice is a folk custom tied to red as the color that keeps bad things away. Fire's color also names the current year: 2026 is the red horse year because its stem, Byeong, is fire.
